FAC (Issue 12) reports a campfire at XS 654864.
15 0735 From S3 to Bde: The Engr element and element from B Btry 2nd Arty departed Rach Kien base camp to provide road clearing party and road security for convoy of 1/46th ARVN. 21 0755 1/46 reports an unmanned roadblock vic XS 742740. ARVN and the Engr plus the M-42 (twin 40mm) will move to investigate and clear obstacle. 24 0830 Engrs will be blowing some dud charges under the southeast bridge. All three line companies were informed of this. 26 0900 From Medics to S3: 1 female civilian was wounded at 2000 hrs 22 Jan by mortar fire. Victim suffered a chest wound. Victim is at Duong Thi Gam, Hamlet #6, My Le village. Victim was evacuated to Tan An. Check with Arty revealed that no friendly mortars were fired at that time. Also, the closest mortar fire from that location was approx 2000 meters. 33 1105 The Assistant Div Commander Brig. Gen O'Connor arrived at 2/14 Inf base camp at Rach Kien. 41 1410 S3 Air sighted a camouflaged sampan with 2 men aboard vic XS 702694. Sampan took evasive action as the chopper flew over it. Arty was called on it. Results sampan destroyed, estimate 2 VC KIA (Poss). 43 1450 C&C to S3: Observed sampan moving on stream near XS 702694. Sampan took evasive action, headed towards bank right away. C&C ship requested instructions, S3 gave order to engage with machineguns. They engaged and observed a man run from the sampan into a hole, came out of the hole and proceeded to a house. C&C did not shoot into the house. 46 1557 1/46 reports that he has 1 WIA from a booby-trap, no enemy contact. 72 2145 From 46th ARVN to S3: VC in vic XS 746746 using loudspeakers to broadcast propaganda, there are firing 81mm into that area.

S2/4/9: Recon platoon was approached by an old man who said he knew location of some equipment. He took Recon to loc Tan Qui Tay XS7378 and pointed out a hand generator for detonating claymore mines vic XS745783.
14 0915 At 0855 Recon 4/9 found roadblock vic XS817758 while on mission of securing area for MEDCAP. There were 3 women and 1 small boy at roadblock location. When Recon element arrived they ran away. Recon requested mine sweeper to check for mines before attempting to clear road. 15 0928 2/14 treted female civilian from My Le who said she was hit by mortar fire last night. 16 0950 4/9 MEDCAP being conducted vic XS815773, secured by Recon 4/9. 20 1135 C/4/9 2nd platoon on LZ vic XS670812 in pursuit of 708 men wearing just pants, no shirts. 27 1425 S3 Air 2/14 sighted 1 sampan with 2 men on board vic XS702694, Arty called, 1 sampan destroyed, 2 VC KIA (Poss). 28 1456 C/4/9 2 VC KIA (BC), 1 blood trail vic XS667855. Looking for VC in water. 1 weapon, Chicom carbine, 1 box ammo captured. 29 1510 2/14 C&C ship vic XS702694 saw 1 sampan with 1 man on board. C&C shot at him and he ran into house - C&C did not shoot into house. 30 1530 Bde aerial observer engaged with Arty 1 sampan containing 2 VC vic XS604892. 2 VC KIA (BC), 1 sampan destroyed. 31 1533 C/4/9 found 13 CBU and 1 sampan vic XS667855. 36 1730 B/4/9 Bushmaster is in contact. Rec'd AW and possible mortar fire at XS778748. Capt Bennett, Tan An, obtained clearance for air strike vic XS786742 for a 1000 meter radius. 38 1845 B/4/9 Bushmaster had 2 VC KIA (BC) at XS786742. 5 VC KIA (Poss). 30 1859 B/2/14 has 1 platoon at XS738693 to secure 2 vehicles that are stuck in rice paddy. 48 2400 SUMMARY: 1st Bde continues opns FAIRFAX and LANIKAI with 4/9 conducting Eagle flights and BUSHMASTER opns. 2/14 conducted local security opns vic Rach Kien.
PLANS SUMMARY: 4/9 Inf will continue FAIRFAX with local security opns. The BUSHMASTER opn will be terminated during teh day. 2/14 Inf will continue opn LANIKAI with an S&D BUDDY opn vic XS7271.
