Hornet 3 asked for 30 min delay on helilift this morning because of weather conditions, granted, units notified.
16 0800 2/14 041200 Takes over Ann Margaret and bridge and air field security from 4/23. 17 0840 W/4/23 Saber element received 30-40 rds SA fire while moving back to extract a platoon size stay-behind ambush. XT 698174. Also heard blast but no detonation, no casualties. Possible 1 57mm Recoilless rifle. Unit returned fire, results unk. 4 tracks moving back, 1 had thrown track. 18 0925 B/3/4 Cav track hit AT mine 696172 (2) WIA US, track is OK. 4/23 Bn C&C ship will extract WIA's. 19 1041 C/4/9 while being airlifted to LZ, chopper rec heavy AW & SA fire, went down vic XS668690 at 1007. 3 slight WIA, 2 additional choppers rec hits but returned without incident. 20 1135 G2 rpts: 25th ARVN reported 300 VC vic XS560722. Report orginated from 924 Spt Gp. ARVN indicate that this unit is poss 506th Bn, ARVN eval C/3; G2 eval F/3. 21 1142 2/14 MEDCAP started at 0915 and was completed at 1130. 23 1210 C/4/9 (76 pers) moving toward downed chopper. Air strike completed at coord 665683. 24 1240 B/4/23 destroyed 1 booby-trapped 60mm mortar rd at XT694171. 25 1040 Delayed Entry: 7 HU-1D's in support of 4/9 helilift rec'd SA fire resulting in hits on all ships. 28 1430 B/4/23 stay-behind patrol sprung ambush against unk number of VC vic coord 694172. Results are unknown. Patrol returning to B/C. 29 1452 Downed chopper has been extracted. 31 1610 Ref item 28: 6 VC appeared in area and made recon by fire. 1 member of ambush returned fire and gave away ambush position. No friendly casualties. 1 VC KIA (Poss). 32 1612 C/4/9 loading RAG boats will be taken to bridge south of Ben Luc. Offload into trucks for movement to Ben Luc, airlift to Cu Chi. 33 1640 4/9 bringing back captured weapons including (7) carbines, (2) 60mm mortars with plates, (2) Thompson sub-MG, assorted ammo, 3 mortar sights, (1) BAR. 39 1802 C/4/9 reports as result of operation conducted 03 Oct 66, at 1047 hours destroyed: 1 house, 3,000 rds SA ammo, 6 Chicom Claymores, 17 rnds 60mm mortar ammo, 50 mixed US and Chicom grenades, 15 81mm mortar rnds, 8 turtle shell mines, 3 anti-tank mines. Captured: 3 Chicom carbines, 2 French carbines, 1 BAR, 2 Thompson sub-machine guns, 2 60mm mortars complete with base plates, bipods and sights, 1 60mm mortar sight, 16 60mm mortar rnds, 8 rifle grenades, 4 anti-tank mines, 5 trip flares, 1 homemade mine, 2 rolls electrical demolition wire, 1 demolition kit with 25 blasting caps, 1 turtle shell mine; Claim 7 KIA (BC) on operation, 2 sampans destroyed by airstrike coord XS665683, 4 KIA (Poss) by Arty fire coord XS684686. 55 2400 SUMMARY: 4/9 Inf conducted airmobile Opn in AO supported by 3/50 ARVN. 4/23 Inf supported by 1 plt Cav conducting S&D operations in FILHOL Plantation. 2/14 Inf returned from opn KAMUELA increased base defense and security.
