1 DECEMBER 1966 1
DECEMBER 1966 Today Lieutenant
Colonel Gilbert Procter Jr., our commander for twenty-seven
months, was transferred to Headquarters, Pacific Command at Camp Smith,
Oahu, Hawaii. His performance for these two and a quarter years was so
magnificent that words will fail to do him justice. In the past few months
he has been our true combat leader in every sense of the word. His farewell
plaque is inscribed "HE SET THE EXAMPLE IN ALL THINGS". His awards for
combat included the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Bronze Star Medal
with "V" for Heroism, The Legion of Merit for Meritorious Service, and The
Silver Star for Gallantry. He earned them all, every day. Our new Battalion
Commander, Lieutenant Colonel William Miller, took over as "Daddy Dragon",
taking up the "Daddy Dragon" M16 rifle. He will lead the 1st Battalion, 14th
Infantry forward with no change in fighting spirit. Under his leadership, we
will spit in 'Ol Charley's eye every time we meet him.
