Robert "Howie" Howe died on August 12, 2013 after battling diabetes for many years. He left these photos of himself taken during his one year tour with 3rd platoon, Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. Always a friend, energetic, with a ready wit and friendly laugh, he carried his weight (more than his weight!) with the platoon, and as a Radio Telephone Operator (RTO) carrying a PRC-25 radio on patrol, served as the communications link between his platoon and their operating base. Below are some of the many roles he filled while with the battalion, during his long year of combat with the Golden Dragons. You can listen to the words of "Howie" Howe, including the story of the tiger attack, and the live radio communications of the battle of November 6, 1969 at LZ St. George, as NVA soldiers fight their way through the perimeter. This is in memory of "Howie".
Thanks to Kevan Welch, Howie's close friend in Vietnam and back in the "World", for making these photos and audio tapes available.
