Working in the Chu Pa mountains, Delta
Company's mission was to secure the crest of the Chu Pa mountain
while other companies cleared the northwestern slope of the
mountain. On that day 1st platoon ran into a North
Vietnamese ambush and was taking heavy enemy fire.

Recollections of Grady Wallis, Delta Co:
When we left the Rock Quarry in late January the
platoon linked up with Bravo Company in the Chu Pa area.
Choppers took 1st platoon to the top of the mountain, with two
platoons of Bravo Company, and on the 9th of February they began
their assault down the mountain. 1st platoon was ambushed
and both Johnnie Ator and a new man, Bobby Gene Gamble, were
killed. |
